Okay, I’ve seen Dancing Matt on a number of blogs by now, but I have to include him here- he’s too delightful to pass up.

Here are this week’s favorites!
I’ve noticed that I have a strong preference for the lyrical pieces on the show- a bit of a surprise to me because I love to watch street dancers, and I try to attend Latin ballroom competitions whenever I can. But these dance forms/choreography don’t translate as well onto the show as the lyrical/jazz/contemporary pieces do, possibly because they tend to require more precision and speed. Regardless of whether one dance form is “harder” than the others, some forms are less forgiving to amateurs/first-timers. Whatever! SYTYCD is a guilty pleasure- I shouldn’t ask so much of it, and there is definitely some amazing dancing that happens on the show. Once again, I couldn’t pick just one, so here are my top 3:
Will/Jessica:
I have a lot of pent-up energy today that needs to be spent. As soon as I get home, I’m totally going to dance along to this video:
I hope someday I get to be someone’s cool grandma and/or be 61 and have the energy to travel all the way around the world… like this amazing woman [via jezebel].
BoingBoing recently featured Clara Belle on BBtv - she made a beautiful little video of herself playing the ukulele- the song is called “Summer Face.” Sweet!
The first time I saw that cars could be really really small is from Family Matters. Steve Urkel had his nerdy little clown car that couldn’t go very fast. But it was still kind of cool:
(So yeah, the only clip I could find was in German, but no translation is needed, right?)
I’m not sure why, but I’ve always loved small cars (small houses too). And here, via BoingBoing, is an awesome gallery of little cars!
The past two weeks at work have been insane. My boss has been in and out of the office, my coworker’s on vacation in California, there were massive phone and network outages in the office last week, there’s a brand new employee in the office for everyone to train, ASL classes have started, 4 of my friends have/had birthdays, my mom wanted me to collect 400 US state quarters- so I can bring them with me to Japan (where she’ll give them to her students)- and somehow I’ve managed to do 3 loads of laundry, finish Atonement, and watch several movies and sytycd, probably all while lying comatose on my bed with the fan set on “Lo” and Emma pawing at my head.
The upcoming weeks are bound to be more of the same, especially as I get geared up to visit Japan. Ay yi yi!
So. My plans for this weekend? Absolutely non-existent. I’ll get outside to run some errands around town and I’m sure I’ll clean up the apartment a bit (it is my week to take the trash out). I also have emails to write, miles to run, and computer updates to install. And hopefully it’ll occur to me to practice my ASL. But other than that, I mostly just plan to thumb through the latest FLAT SEXY ABS! article from Women’s Health. This will be followed by lots of sitting around on my butt.
Amen for butts.
I liked George Carlin.
I never watched his stand-up comedy, but somehow, he and his gravely voice became a gold standard for credibility and humor. I was too old for Shining Time Station when I finally discovered it, but I watched it anyway because he played Mr. Conductor — Didi Conn and the guy who played Schemer also had me hooked.
In addition to some of the other movies where he made cameo appearances, it seemed like people were always quoting him. And in the days following his death, I was reminded of some of those sound bytes that made him so appealing to me:
And as for me, I’m going to post this tribute to Mr. Conductor that someone made.
I totally need to make an Emma music video now.
